One by One Mentoring Report

h-p5I mentored a girl named Ann (name changed for privacy) for about a year and a half. She was 17 years old when we started meeting together. She had a brand new baby and a 19 month old toddler.   We got along great from the very beginning and always had things to talk about. She loved making the scrapbook and always enjoyed going through the developmental pages with me.  Her baby, Tomme, was a very big and healthy baby and met all of his developmental milestones right on time and some he met early.  Ann's family was a little wary of me at first, but her mother, the children's grandmother, warmed up quickly and soon was greeting me on the phone and visiting a little when I came for visits. Ann was always very shy about talking about spiritual things. I always took the month's verse on an index card so she could put it up in her room if she wanted to. She always seemed to enjoy that and I would read the verses with her and her children. I took some Bible story books several times as the monthly gift since Lisa told me they had almost no books in their home. At the end of each visit I would always ask her if she had anything specific she wanted me to pray about and we would pray together before I left.

I was completely out of my comfort zone dealing with a teen mother in a very rough area of the large city where I live.  Before this mentoring experience, I was not very comfortable praying around other people and sharing my faith.  This experience really stretched me and I spent a lot of time before our visits praying for Ann, her children and for opportunities to talk about the Lord.   At the end of each visit, I always felt blessed by Ann's sweet and accepting spirit. Although our official mentoring time is over, we still visit on the phone occasionally.  Thank you to One by One Ministries and the pregnancy center and other agencies with whom they work, for providing me with this opportunity.
