Giving Back for the Holidays
Giving back for the holidays is a wonderful, age-old tradition. Families often buy toys or groceries for families in need, serve at soup kitchens or shelters, bake cookies for first responders, or find any number of other ways to give back and serve others in their communities.
If you are looking for ways to give back to your community this year, consider investing your time or dollars with One by One.
One by One Ministries provides mentors to pregnant and new moms. Our mentors walk alongside their moms during this critical time in their lives providing friendship, support, baby development information, parenting education, life skills lessons, connection to community resources, and the joy and love of Jesus.
We offer a number of ways for families to volunteer around the holidays and beyond.
Christmas Mom Blessing Day: Each year at Christmas, we host a Mom Blessing Day and invite others to donate $25 Walmart gift cards, put together and donate holiday gift sets, or package toiletries, cleaning supplies, or holiday decorations to provide joy and necessities for our moms and their babies. We have in-person events in Memphis, San Antonio, and Dallas, and we send “Blessing Boxes” with gift cards and holiday happies to moms in our virtual program and in our communities.
Baby Showers: Throughout the year, churches and social groups host baby showers for One by One. They collect items such as baby clothing, accessories, diapers, wipes, etc., for One by One’s mentor closet. We provide these items to our moms at our Christmas Blessing Day and throughout the year when needed.
Collect Spare Change: We have a Your Change Changes Lives campaign where anyone can collect spare change and donate it to One by One to help us provide mentoring and discipleship support to our moms. Just $50 provides a month of mentoring to a new mom!
Office Volunteers: Our Memphis and San Antonio offices have opportunities for individuals or groups to stop in and help with counting coins, compiling curriculum, assisting with mailings, putting together “happies” for new moms, and helping with other administrative needs throughout the year.
Giving Tuesday Donations: Anyone wanting to donate to support our Blessing Day events can do so by donating to our Giving Tuesday campaign (or make a general donation to support our moms on our website here).
We also offer in-person and virtual mentoring opportunities for English or Spanish-speaking Christian women.
If you are a Christian, you know we’re called to serve – and not just during the holidays. We’re looking for Christian women ready and willing to answer that call to serve as mentors to our moms. We provide free training along with the curriculum and supplies you need to mentor a new mom – equipping you to provide practical help for today and eternal hope for tomorrow. Your responsibility will be to meet with your mom once a month – to review the curriculum, listen, be a friend, support her, find out her needs, and pray for her. We’re with you to provide support each step of the way.
If you’re not sure you have what it takes to mentor a new mom, consider these criteria: Do you love Jesus? Can you be a friend? Can you show up when you say you will? If you say yes to each of these questions, you can be a mentor – and more than that, you can develop a long-term relationship that will likely bless you as much as it blesses the mom you mentor.
